Freeloader

The Freeloader project was started at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and North Carolina State University. Initially it was designed to aggregate idle storage resources within a network. The project grew to incorporate many features such as prefetching, dynamic striping, replication, encryption and “predictive” data placement. Freeloader evolved to be demonstrated as a storage cache for data intensive scientific applications.
