POSSIBLE USCF SIDE EVENT:

There is a possibility that the U.S. Chess Federation will hold an all-star scholastic side event, also in the UMBC Ballroom. This invitational event would be a three-round "Team-Simul" involving four six-person scholastic teams selected from winners of the 1997 USA Super-Nationals. Each team would be augmented by one of the four top Grandmasters in the USA. When two teams meet, the Grandmaster simultaneously plays the opposing students. If this event takes place, rounds will be Friday 6-9pm, Saturday 9-11am, and Saturday 2-5pm.

Qualify to Play the World Champion

On Saturday, May 17, 1997, PCA World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov will simultaneously play eight students: four members of the UMBC Chess Team, and four members of an All-Star Baltimore-Area Scholastic Team. The All-Star Team will consist of 1997 Maryland Scholastic Chess Champion Raymond Kaufman (1908), and three other Maryland students to be chosen at a qualifying tournament held 8:30-11:30am, Saturday, May 17, at UMBC.

QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT

Eligibility:

Any student in grades 1-12 in any public or private school in Maryland.

Format:

6-round Swiss System, in three separate sections:
  1. Baltimore City Public Schools
  2. Baltimore County Public Schools
  3. Any other public or private school in Maryland

Time Control:

Game in 7 minutes.

Entry Fee:

Free. No memberships required.

Rounds:

Beginning 8:30am, May 17, 1997, in UMBC University Center Ballroom.

Registration:

Please register in advance by mailing your NAME, USCF RATING (if any), SCHOOL, and SECTION to: Derrick Longo, Potomac 360, UMBC 1000 Hilltop Circle, Baltimore, MD 21250. Entries postmarked by May 9 are guaranteed a place. Entries will also be accepted 7-8am at the door on May 17; however, participation will be limited to 320. All pre-registrants must check in by 8am.

Prizes:

The top thirty players in each section will gain entry to one of four simultaneous exhibitions: The winner of each section will play World Champion Garry Kasparov. The next seven finishers in each section will play Grandmaster Alexander Shabalov (2640). The next twenty-two players in each section will play UMBCs Oxana Tarassova (2122, ranked 22 among USA women) or UMBCs Bella Belegradek (2102).

Transportation:

Free roundtrip bus transportation (2 buses) will be provided from Baltimore to UMBC. Buses will depart at 7am from Baltimore City College High School and from Patterson High School. Buses will depart UMBC at 6pm.

Chess Equipment:

Each participant must bring his or her own tournament-size chess board, set, and clock. Equipment may be purchased from the USCF, tele. (800) 388-5464.

Action Chess Battle of Champions:

Saturday-Sunday, June 21-22, UMBC Lecture Hall II. Bring a digital walkman-style FM receiver to hear move-by-move sports commentary. Watch instantaneous computer projection of games from autosensory chessboard. Rounds begin at 12noon, 3pm, and 7pm each day. Double Round-Robin. Game in 30mins. Admission: $10 adults, $2 students in grades 12 and under. The competitors:

Second Annual Summer Chess Camp at UMBC:

Kasparov vs. IBM Deep Blue

May 3-11, Kasparov will play the IBM chess machine Deept Blue in a rematch in New York City.
