National Science Foundation Symposium on Next
Generation
of Data Mining and Cyber-Enabled Discovery for Innovation
The dramatic increase in the availability of data from
various sources is creating many fundamental challenges in computing, storage,
communication, and human computer interaction issues for data mining. Scientists,
engineers, and businesses are facing with emerging problems that involve complex
networked observations, massive simulation-data sets, and ubiquitous sensory
data streams. These heterogeneous data sources should be linked and analyzed
for discovering the next frontiers of science, arts, and technology. We also
need to look beyond the current cyber-infrastructure and explore how the next
generation of networked data mining applications will support such large-scale,
ubiquitous, multi-source, and data intensive domains.
This National Science Foundation symposium on Next Generation Data Mining and Cyber Enabled Discovery for Innovation (NGDM’07) will bring together data mining researchers, scientists and engineers from a diverse background along with domain experts for various emerging problems that are relevant to Cyber Enabled Discovery for Innovation (CDI). The objective is to enhance the understanding of the challenges in front of the data mining and the CDI community.
NGDM’07 will focus on the following areas:
1) Data Mining in Science and Engineering
2) Media, Pervasive Computing, and Ubiquitous Data Mining
3) Data mining in Security, Surveillance, and Privacy protection
4) Social Science, Finance, Digital Humanities, and Data Mining
5) The Web, Semantics, and Data Mining
The need for organizing the symposium in each of these areas is explained in the following.
Many scientific disciplines are facing with the challenge to collect, manage, and analyze voluminous data in a networked environment. Collection of virtual observatories, biomedical databases, bioinformatics databases and earth science data repositories are some examples. Collaborative scientific research over the grid, peer-to-peer-networks for sharing data and applications across communities and ubiquitous sensor networks for monitoring natural phenomena such as rainforests, birds and earthquakes are also creating heterogeneous and networked environments with rich voluminous data streams. We need data mining algorithms and systems for supporting discovery of new science in this new frontier. NGDM’07 will bring in data mining researchers and scientists together for exploring these issues.
Media, pervasive computing, and ubiquitous environments are playing increasingly important role in our daily life. The next generation of media for dispensing and retrieving information may be quiet different from how it worked in the 20th century. The era of Internet-based media-service-portals, P2P media, and ad-hoc networks are starting to change the dynamics of media. Data mining will play a key role in this new era. The symposium will explore the challenges in this area.
Data mining for security and surveillance continues to be a challenging area with many possibilities. The NGDM’07 will bring in researchers to discuss outstanding issues in linking and analyzing different types of data such as text, video images, network communication traffic in a networked environment for detecting threats. Privacy protection in data mining is also growing as an important area. Privacy protection in large, distributed, multi-party environment in a scalable and robust manner is proving to be a challenging issue. NGDM’07 will explore the emerging issues in this area.
Social Sciences and humanities in general are emerging in new a shape in this digital age. Computing is playing an important role in many disciplines such as history, philosophy, linguistics, literature, art, and music. The importance of data management and mining is also growing in these areas. This symposium will explore how data mining can help emerging applications in this area.
The world-wide-web is playing an increasingly important role in our life. The next generation of web application will have many challenges that will require data mining tools. For example, semantic web is starting to play an important role in advanced smarter web applications. The Semantic web technology is also gaining increasing attention. Both construction of semantic webs and building semantic web-based applications will require the data mining technology. Adaptive web content management and adversarial manipulation of the web are some examples. However, the challenges need to be better understood and explored. The NGDM’07 symposium will facilitate better understanding of the problems and potential research directions.

4. Poster and demo sessions
We would like to invite paper (extended abstract) submissions from data
mining researchers and practitioners. The papers should be relevant to the
focus areas of NGDM'07. The papers must present innovative research directions
that may be suitable for the agenda of the symposium. Submitted papers should
not exceed 5 pages. The symposium will accept only electronic submission
of papers in PDF or Postscript format to ngdm07 at agnik dot com
with "NGDM07 Submission" in the subject line. The papers will
be included in the NSF Symposium Proceedings. The symposium will also produce
an edited book. Extended versions of the selected papers will be included
in the book.
Latex and Word
style files for the symposium proceedings should be used for preparing the final camera-ready version. Both the full and poster presentations can have abstracts with at most 5 pages. The size of the poster board will be 4 feet x 4 feet. Each Poster presenter will also give a short presentation (2 slides).
Note that the symposium is about the next generation of challenges. So we are looking for big exciting ideas, challenges that need to be solved, and possible methodologies on both algorithmic and applications-grounds even if they are not completely matured.
