UMBC Chess Champions
The University Champion is selected each fall in the UMBC
Championship. Typically, this Championship is a five-round Swiss
System tournament, held some weekend in September or early
October. The Champion is awarded the title of ``UMBC Chess Champion''
and is given a large perpetual trophy to keep for one year. This
practice was formalized in fall 1993; previously, there were
occasional club championships held at various times.
The tournament is open to any full-time or part-time UMBC student
(undergraduate or graduate) who is registered for the fall semester
and making progress toward the degree. At the discretion of the Club,
students who have pledged to register for the spring term of the given
academic year may also be allowed to play.
