UMBC Chess Events for 1996-97 Academic Year
Fall 1996
- Weekly meetings (throughout year). Every Friday afternoon,
4-6pm, University Center Room 312. Informal game, blitz, analysis,
individual instruction, conversation.
- September 6 (Friday), 10am-2pm, Activities Fair, UC Plaza.
Party and blitz tournament to follow at 4pm in UC Ballroom Lounge.
- Weekly coaching sessions for UMBC Chess Teams by UMBC Chess
Coach and National Master Igor Epshteyn.
Every Saturday morning, 9:30am-12:30noon, beginning September 7.

Open to UMBC Community on space-available basis.

UMBC Championship
(5-round Swiss System), for UMBC students only.
ACIV 210. To qualify for any UMBC Chess Team, you must play in this event.

Exhibition Action Chess Playoffs. Lecture Hall V.
Games at 3pm, 4:30pm, and 6pm. Live sports commentary,
and computer projection from autosensory board.
Single elimination playoff for top four finishers from
UMBC Chess Championship will compete for $100 in cash prizes.
Bring a digital walkman-style FM receiver headset to hear commentary.
- October 12 (Saturday), 12-4pm, UMBC vs. Harvard University
(6-board intercollegiate match), with live analysis by Senior Master
Craig Jones. UMBC Library. Spectators welcome.
- October 12 (Saturday), 10am-12noon, Family Day at
UMBC. Free chess instruction for elementary and middle school
students, UMBC Library.
- 10-11am, How to play chess.
- 11-12am, Elementary strategy and tactics.
- 12-4pm, Free chess play.
- October 27 (Sunday), 1-5pm, UMBC vs. Johns Hopkins
(intercollegiate match), University Center Ballroom Lounge, UMBC.
Spectators welcome. Remember to reset your clocks back one hour for
Eastern Standard Time.

Pan-American Chess Championships
Renaissance Harborplace Hotel, Baltimore. Three separate
six-round tournaments:
- December 27-30, Pan-Am Intercollegiate Team Championship (5-round Team SS).
- December 27-30, Pan-Am Scholastic Team Championship (5-round Team SS).
First board on winning team receives full four-year
tuition scholarship to UMBC. Each of the other three boards on
winning team receives $2,000/year four-year scholarship to UMBC.
- December 27-30, Pan-Am Open (5-round SS), for any individual.

at Quadmania spring Festival,
outside in Quad (rain site: ECS Building Atrium).
- May 14-20 (Wednesday-Tuesday), Final Exams
- May 17 (Saturday), 12:00-5:30pm.
Timed Simultaneous Exhibition:
World Champion Garry Kasparov vs. UMBC "A" Team, Kasparov vs.
Baltimore-Area All-Star Scholastic Team.
Live commentary by Senior Master Craig Jones.
Talk by Kasparov begins 12:00noon; simul begins 12:30pm.
University Center Ballroom. $10 adults; students in grades
12 and under free. Qualify to play the World Champion!
