UMBC Chess Events for 1995-96 Academic Year
June 22, 1996, Lecture Hall II. Grandmaster Ilya J. Smirin (right)
defeats Senior Master William ``the exterminator'' Morrison 3.5-0.5 in UMBC's
first exhibition chess match. The match featured computer projection
from an autosensory board, video closeups of the players, and
live sports commentary by Masters Craig Jones and Igor Epshteyn
broadcast to spectators on FM radio.
Chess Club Events 1995-96
- Weekly meetings (throughout year): Fridays, 4-6pm, UC 312 (or outside in front of pub).
Everyone is welcome, including beginners.
- Coaching sessions (summer 1995): Wednesdays, 7-9:30pm, ACIV 210
- Coaching sessions (fall 1995-spring 1996): Saturdays, 9:30am-12:30noon, ACIV 210.
Lead by National Master Igor Epshteyn. All team members and prospective team members
are encourged to attend. Other strong UMBC players are also welcome.

- UMBC Open:
Sat-Sun, March 16-17, 1996, UC Ballroom. The "Sweet 16"
playoffs of the 1996 Maryland Scholastic Championship will be held at the
same time, with the winner receiving a scholarship to UMBC.
