Master Preparation: An Advanced Course in Chess
For the serious tournament player who would like to improve his or her
game. Emphasis on the strategic principles of the middlegame and
their relationships with pawn structure and typical endings. By
Master Epshteyn and International Grandmaster Ilya J. Smirin. Offered
every fall and spring, since fall 1995. A non-credit Continuing
Education Course. Meets Wednesday evenings.
- Fundamentals of Chess
Introduction to the strategy and tactics of chess.
No prior experience in chess required. A non-credit
Continuing Education Course, offered for the first time
in fall 1996 by Senior Master William Morrison. Meets
Thursday evenings.
- CMSC-791 Graduate Seminar: Computer Chess
Research seminar in computer chess. By Professors James Mayfield and
Alan T. Sherman. Prerequisites: CMSC-641 Algorithms and CMSC-681
Artificial Intelligence, or permission of instructors. Offered
once in fall 1995.
- Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking
Through Intellectual Sports
Under development by Alan T. Sherman. We hope to offer as
a three-credit honors course in spring 1997.
