  For Homework 5, Question #1, we need to make the additional assumption that the graph G has at least two vertices. Otherwise a graph with a single vertex and zero edges is technically connected and has no cycles but does not have any vertices with degree 1.

  The syllabus after Spring Break has been revised. The midterm exam is a week earlier. Homework assignments will be due on Thursdays and Quizzes on Tuesdays (same as before break). Please update your calendars. The revised course description and syllabus are available in PDF.

  A Case Study of Toyota Unintended Acceleration and Software Safety by Philip Koopman, Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. A key point in these slides is that the Electronic Throttle Control System in Toyota cars (circa 2008) uses a main CPU and a monitor chip, both of which contain software. For our class, the point is that "it is impracticable to test everything".

  Compare this with the prior episode of unintended accelaration of Audi 5000 cars in 1982-83. This report from the Center for Auto Safety indicates that the suspicion was that the problem was mechanical.

  The bars over the sets in parts c, d and e mean complement. The complement of a set is everything that is not in the set. So, for example, the complement of A is all the real numbers that are less than -3 or greater than 0.

You can find your homework using this number.
